Bariatric Surgery Houston: Less Invasive Weight Loss Procedures

Bariatric Surgery Houston: Less Invasive Weight Loss Procedures

Bariatric surgery is the umbrella term used to describe several different types of weight loss surgeries. If you are considering bariatric surgery in Houston, Dr. Brian Mirza has more than 15 years of experience performing these types of procedures and always prefers to use the least invasive methods possible. Here is a brief overview of the types of bariatric surgical types.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Gastric sleeve surgery, or a sleeve gastrectomy, is one of the fastest growing and most popular weight loss surgeries in the country today. A portion of the patient’s stomach is removed in order to help control hunger hormones and reduce the amount of food that an obese patient can take in. A sleeve gastrectomy allows most patients to lose 70 percent of excess weight within the first year after the procedure. The reasons why a gastric sleeve surgery is so popular is due to the shorter recovery time and the high rate of success in resolving obesity-related issues. This is the least invasive of the various types of weight loss surgeries.

Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery, also called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, is a complex surgery that splits the stomach into two sections. Following the procedure, the upper portion of the stomach will be restricted to the size of an egg and the lower portion will be bigger. The upper portion is attached to the intestines, which allows the patient to feel full after eating only a small amount of food. Fewer calories are also absorbed when the patient eats.

Lap Band and Revision

The lap band procedure was more popular about ten years ago, but Dr. Brian Mirza at Bariatric Care Centers in Houston does not recommend the procedure these days due to its more invasive nature and new research studies on lap band results. A saline band is placed around the stomach to restrict the amount of food the patient can consume. Recent reports indicate that more complications can arise from this type of surgery, such as slippage of the saline band. The lap band also has higher failure rates than other bariatric surgeries, so it is not often recommended in the US. Many times, a patient will require a follow-up or “revision” surgery to adjust the size or location of the lap band.

Bariatric surgery in Houston can be a viable option for patients who have tried and failed to resolve obesity-related concerns through the use of medically supervised dieting. Many patients who undergo weight loss surgery will see their type 2 diabetes completely resolved. Contact Bariatric Care Centers in Houston for a consultation with Dr. Mirza to determine whether you are a good candidate for bariatric weight loss surgery.
